Mandibular Advancement Splint Therapy

A Custom Oral Appliance For Snoring And Sleep Apnoea

What Is A Mandibular Advancement Splint?

A mandibular advancement splint, often called a MAS, is a custom-made oral appliance worn while you sleep.

It looks a little like a mouthguard, but it is designed for a different purpose. Instead of protecting your teeth, it gently holds your lower jaw in a slightly forward position. This can help create more space at the back of the throat, making it easier for air to move through overnight.

For suitable patients, MAS therapy may help reduce snoring and support better breathing during sleep.

At Dental Sleep Professionals, we provide custom MAS therapy for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, with care led by experienced dental sleep medicine clinicians.

What Can MAS Therapy Help With?

MAS therapy is commonly used for people who snore, have obstructive sleep apnoea, or struggle with CPAP.

It may help with:

MAS therapy does not suit every patient, and it is not a replacement for proper diagnosis. But for the right person, it can be a practical and comfortable way to treat sleep-related breathing issues.

Oral appliances are commonly used for snoring and mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, and may also be considered for people who cannot use CPAP.

What Our Patients Say

The Benefits Of MAS Therapy

How Does MAS Therapy Work?

When you fall asleep, the muscles around your throat relax.

For some people, this causes the airway to narrow. As air moves through the smaller space, the soft tissues can vibrate, which causes snoring. In obstructive sleep apnoea, the airway can become partly or fully blocked, disturbing breathing and sleep quality.

A mandibular advancement splint helps by gently positioning the lower jaw forward. This can move the tongue and soft tissues away from the back of the throat, helping keep the airway more open.

MAS Therapy Vs CPAP

CPAP is a common and effective treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea, but some people find it hard to use consistently.

A mandibular advancement splint offers a different style of treatment. It does not push air into the airway. It works by physically supporting the jaw and airway position.
